The story
Who Barbara actually is
Barbara Ann Corcoran was born in 1949 in Edgewater, New Jersey — the second of ten children in a working-class Irish-Catholic family. Dyslexic and a self-described "D student," she held 22 jobs by age 23 before finding her calling.
In 1973, she borrowed $1,000 from a boyfriend, quit her waitressing job, and started a small New York City real-estate firm. After the partnership ended, she built it on her own into The Corcoran Group — one of the most powerful residential brokerages in New York. Over roughly 25 years she grew it into a brand associated with billions in sales, and in 2001 she sold it to NRT for $66 million.
In 2009, she joined the original cast of ABC's Shark Tank, where she has invested an estimated ~$62 million across more than 120 deals. Her best-known investment — The Comfy, taken for just $50,000 in 2017 — has reportedly returned her around $468 million, one of the most successful deals in the show's history.
She's the bestselling author of Shark Tales: How I Turned $1,000 into a Billion Dollar Business, along with If You Don't Have Big Breasts, Put Ribbons on Your Pigtails and Nextville. She hosts the Business Unusual podcast, mentors founders through her AngelList syndicate Barbara Corcoran Venture Partners, and reaches millions across Instagram and TikTok (~1.2M followers each).
Famously contrarian about money — "I've never saved a dime in my life" — Barbara built a career and a fortune (publicly estimated around $100 million) on the belief that resilience, personality, and the courage to get past "no" matter more than circumstances or a perfect résumé.
