Extreme Ownership (signature)
The foundational principle behind the bestseller: leaders must own everything in their world — there is no one else to blame. Jocko shows what that mindset actually looks like in an organization: how taking total ownership up, down, and across the chain ends excuses, dissolves the blame culture, and turns underperforming teams into teams that win. It is the talk that reframes how a room thinks about accountability for good.
The Laws of Combat
The four principles Task Unit Bruiser lived by under fire — Cover and Move (teamwork and mutual support), Simple (keep plans and communication clear), Prioritize and Execute (stay calm and handle the most important thing first when everything is overwhelming), and Decentralized Command (empower people to lead). Jocko translates each law directly from the battlefield to the boardroom, with the stories that make them stick and the practices that make them work.
Decentralized Command & High-Performance Teams
No leader can make every decision, and no organization scales if people wait for orders. Jocko shows how to build genuine decentralized command — clear intent, empowered subordinate leaders, and the trust and communication that let teams execute independently — so the whole organization moves faster and gets stronger under pressure rather than seizing up.
The Dichotomy of Leadership
Every leadership strength taken too far becomes a weakness. Drawing on his book with Leif Babin, Jocko maps the dichotomies every leader has to balance — aggressive yet not reckless, disciplined yet not rigid, confident yet humble, owning everything yet empowering the team — and gives leaders the judgment to find the equilibrium that actually wins.
Discipline Equals Freedom
The mindset engine underneath everything else. Jocko makes the case — bluntly and memorably — that discipline is not a restriction but the path to freedom: how showing up, doing the hard thing, and owning the small decisions builds the resilience, focus, and personal accountability that carry a person and a team through anything.
Leadership & Decision-Making Under Pressure
How the decision-making that wins on the battlefield translates to high-stakes business moments. Jocko walks through mission planning, prioritization, risk mitigation, and the discipline of acting decisively with imperfect information — the habits that let leaders make good calls when the stakes are highest and the clock is running.
The story
Who Jocko actually is
Jocko Willink is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL officer, the co-author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win, host of the top-rated Jocko Podcast, and the co-founder and CEO of Echelon Front, a leadership-consulting firm. Born in Torrington, Connecticut, in 1971, he enlisted in the Navy at nineteen and spent twenty years in the SEAL Teams, rising from the enlisted ranks to become a commissioned officer and ultimately a lieutenant commander.
During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Willink deployed to Ramadi as commander of SEAL Team Three's Task Unit Bruiser, which fought through the Battle of Ramadi and became the most highly decorated Special Operations unit of the Iraq War. For his leadership he was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star. After returning home, he served as the officer in charge of training for all West Coast SEAL Teams, designing and running the leadership programs that prepared SEALs for combat, before retiring from the Navy in 2010.
With fellow Task Unit Bruiser leader Leif Babin, Willink founded Echelon Front to teach the leadership principles they had forged on the battlefield — Extreme Ownership, the Laws of Combat, and Decentralized Command — to businesses and organizations. Together they wrote Extreme Ownership and The Dichotomy of Leadership, and Willink went on to author Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual, Leadership Strategy and Tactics: Field Manual, the novel Final Spin, and the best-selling Way of the Warrior Kid children's series — the first of which is being adapted into a feature film starring Chris Pratt.
Since 2015 he has hosted the Jocko Podcast, a wide-ranging examination of leadership, discipline, and the lessons of war that has grown to roughly two million subscribers, and he has built a portfolio of businesses including the clean-nutrition brand Jocko Fuel and the American-made gear company Origin. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, he remains one of the most recognizable and in-demand voices on leadership, discipline, and building teams that win under pressure.
