What your audience walks away with

  • Outcome

Team of Teams — Leading Adaptive Organizations

The model he built when command-and-control couldn't keep pace with a networked adversary: how shared consciousness, empowered execution, trust, and common purpose let a large organization move with the speed and adaptability of a small team. The definitive keynote on adaptive leadership.

  • On Character — The Leadership Behaviors That Build Trust

From his 2025 book: character as the intersection of conviction and personal discipline, and how the choices leaders make — who they reward, what they value — define teams and cultures over the long run.

  • Leading Through Risk & Uncertainty

From Risk: A User's Guide: a practical system for detecting, assessing, and responding to the risks that actually threaten an organization — and why the biggest risks are usually the ones inside our control.

  • Resilience, Adaptability & Change

Why highly efficient systems are fragile and resilient organizations that absorb shocks and pivot quickly are more valuable in volatile environments — and how to build teams that adapt rather than break.

  • From the Battlefield to the Boardroom (tailored)

Thirty-four years of leadership under the highest stakes, translated into practical guidance for executive teams — decision-making, building trust, and leading people through the hardest moments.

The story

Who Stanley actually is

Stanley A. McChrystal was born at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1954, into an Army family. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1976 and was commissioned into the Army, where he would serve for 34 years.

McChrystal rose to command the 75th Ranger Regiment and then, from 2003 to 2008, Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) — leading the special-operations campaign against Al Qaeda in Iraq. It was there, facing a faster and more networked enemy, that he pioneered the "team of teams" approach that would later make him one of the most studied leaders in business. Promoted to four-star general in 2009, he served as Commander of the International Security Assistance Force and U.S. Forces in Afghanistan, and retired in 2010 with four-star rank.

After leaving the Army he joined Yale University as a senior fellow teaching leadership, and in 2011 co-founded McChrystal Group, a leadership-advisory firm where he serves as CEO and Chairman. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller _Team of Teams_, the memoir _My Share of the Task_, _Leaders: Myth and Reality_, _Risk: A User's Guide_, and, in 2025, _On Character: Choices That Define a Life_ — and remains one of the most sought-after keynote speakers in the world on leadership, teams, and leading through complexity.
